Afi, or Comfort as she’s also called, is the amazing seamstress who has sown the Color me Ghana design onto our t-shirts to give them their great look. She has her own small shop on Spintex road in Accra. Afi stays in a house behind the shop together with her younger sister Yaabako, or Rose, who joined Afi in Accra a year ago. The sisters are born and raised in Odomanse in the Eastern region, but like so many other Ghanaians they have moved to Accra in the search of better opportunities. Their older sister stays a bit further down on Spintex. She’s also a seamstress and when Afi first moved to Accra some years ago she was working at her sister’s shop until she had saved up some money and could get her own shop.
Back in Odomanse Afi was also working as a seamstress. She started as an apprentice with a lady at the market there and completed her learning period about six years ago. Afi tells me that she really likes the job and that already as a young girl she used to collect pieces of fabric to put them together to make different designs. Till this day her favorite undertaking is to design dresses. Out of the numerous fabrics one which Afi likes is called Daviva, and she shows me a lovely blue print with a red, swirly plant pattern.
Afi’s favorite food is fufu with light soup and fish (read more about Ghanaian food here: Foodian).
In the future Afi’s aspiration is for her business to expand and getting a bigger shop.
These t-shirts, as well as our other products, are soon to be found on our shop www.colormeghana.com, stay tuned!
